keeping in mind the words of the poet Pierre Joris, ". . . I make the arrogant claim that the poet is possibly the last, in Robert Kelly’s words, ‘scientist of the whole… to whom all data whatsoever are of use.’ . . . The prerogative of the poet is to steal directly whatever is of use, without needing to theoretically kowtow via analysis, explicatio, critical cloning or proof of pc allegiance."
What a great link, Donna. Once again…many thanks. To answer (or to attempt to comment) on his question (posit?) it seems to me that a poem just “is”… just like everyone and everything else. It owes nothing to the reader/hearer other than itself. This post seems to echol the age old question as to whether poetry has an obligation to “heal” or “correct” or some other “noble endeavor”…and as far as I can see the only obligation it has is to itself. Truth is all that is needed. All else flows from that.
Christopher Phelps is himself a very fine poet. I hope to make more of his poetry available here in future. To risk second guessing I do believe that this poet would agree, as I do, with your assertion “. . the only obligation it has is to itself”. Thank you, Merrill.
Typo: That should read: echo….sorry.
