Why Animal Rights Is the Next Frontier for the Left | The New Republic

PETA, the world’s premier animal rights organization, has been criticized for its tactics, which include comparing the struggle of animals to the struggle of marginalized humans.Oli Scarff/Getty Images

As the left hardens its commitment to fighting climate change, social injustice, and rampant capitalism, the question of what to do about animals will become inescapable.

A view from the bottom of the watering hole

Here’s your tiny moment of zen for today. If you put a camera at the bottom of a bucket placed in the middle of a desert, several different kinds of animals will come to drink from it.Important note: “The swimmi

MAW SHEIN WIN ~ A Longhouse Birdhouse

Glow worm

A bed with softer animals

It is raining.
It is Tuesday night.
There are 36 steps up to Alan’s apartment on the East Sde.
A bed with softer animals.
A Doberman Pinscher walks into a 7-11 and buys a carton of milk.
I notice these things.

Rain waters the buildings and they grow and grow.
Makes thieves work harder.
Softens mountains.
Ruins sandwiches.

Some paintings make me cry.
I Like Crying.
Gunsmoke was a good show to cry to
Also, the Waltons’ Christmas Special.

Alan is reading about cannibals in New Guinea.
The cannibals average at five feet tall.
They roast their dead for 30 days then bury them in the jungle.
Alan told me it rains more in the jungle, but I knew that already.

What I don’t know is how lightning feels on the body.
Or what makes a glowworm glow.
Or why the neighbor keeps knocking his head against the wall.

A Longhouse Birdhouse

A Longhouse Birdhouse: MORRIS GRAVES ~

A handwritten letter to his brother Wallace Graves,

from Eureka, California, June 8, 1965:

“Walden Pond received. I’d read a few pages when I remembered that Margaret Callahan had sent me a copy when I first lived at The Rock. I was only able to read a few pages of it and laid it aside. There is something about wisdom that has never engaged me. Folly is funnier — and vice more fun. An awful confession to finally have to make.

I will read on in Walden though this time — but so far page after page of bon mots (though in marvelous English) gets me to saying, “Oh, blow it out your ass!” and I lay the book down and reach for another box of Cracker Jacks (they each have a prize in them, you know).”

“Most animals live their lives independently of us, but they dwell in habitats that we shape profoundly. Gathered below are images of animals in the news from the past several weeks, seen from the perspectives of their human observers, companions, captors, and caretakers.”
