Hair – Air

Bluish, a haibun by Donna Fleischer / South by Southeast 20:2 Summer 2013

Our early Spring climb picks through scrub brush, wintered pine clumps, HWA-devastated hemlocks, beyond the ridge line, up around a kettle pond, and into the oaks. There’s some weekday quiet.

At the top a ledge of trap rock forks to the right. Both feet don’t fit together. There’s a 920-foot drop. We turn back. It was here where Chief Metacomet of the Wampanoag went on as he fled for his life from English colonists. He hid out there in a cave for a while, eventually forced northward to his capture and death. When chestnut oak stands have lost their leaves in winter, I drive by in wonder at this crime, the human-twisted cedar, atomic tictoc.
