Loved his poems. I’d heard him read, and talked with him afterwards, reciting three lines from a poem he’d written to him and he chimed in. During a Q & A his dixie cup of water leaked one faint slow drop at a time over a period of an hour in which he was so immersed in the questionings and discussion that he wasn’t aware of the little pool of water at his feet. – Donna Fleischer

Area 17: The passing of a wonderful human being, and poet, Martin Lucas.

Martin Lucas | Presence

Martin Lucas, aged 51. How beloved he was by so many in the international haiku community, for countless reasons. There is his inimitable journal Presence, his poetics, best expressed in his book of essays, Stepping Stones: a way into haiku*, his gifted skills as an editor, writer, poet.

I am distraught that he lost his life and that so many of us in the haiku world have lost someone that brilliant, kind, and generous of spirit. My condolences to Martin’s family, friends, and colleagues, particularly his fellow poet, British Haiku Society colleague, and one who misses him greatly, Alan Summers. Repose in peace, Martin. – Donna Fleischer
