Estes’s spiraling lines make staircase shapes too, though she does want the people in her poems, as well as their topics, to meet. She writes “on behalf of life, its befogged aioli / logic, its belief a-go-go.” For her, complexity, asymmetry, sensory delight, and ornament are life: they are signs and reasons for it. Simplicity, on the other hand—reductiveness, single answers, plainness — is death; it is what we get when we stop asking for more. – Stephen Burt
