I saw the pale rushes with plumes, the last word
of last year at this threshold where the big
picture windows copied us in black and gold,
disillusioned, hopeful, heartsick, inconsequential.
Walking the frozen deck, making repairs
to the caul of light, you guard us with candles
and blessings of hemlock in the glistering
absent-minded and marauding winds. A knobbly
foal leg, a wedge of cake and—I stubbornly cling
to the mistake overheard in the craving—pálinka
pale green flame of clinking spring
